贝蒂克莱泊，1747年出生于英国曼切斯特，父母都是钢琴老师，他在父母的耳濡目染之下，也对钢琴表现着情有独钟，5岁时跟随父母学习钢琴，8岁时随父母在伦敦拉文特花园皇家歌剧院第一次登上舞台，那时候的他已经崭露头角，1785年，贝蒂克莱泊的妻子因肺结核去世，妻子去世前最喜欢看各种各种的钢琴名品展览，伤心欲绝的他决心为妻子亲自制作一台钢琴，他在住处附近租了一家作坊，夜以继日的制作钢琴，来完成妻子的心愿，几个月以后，世界上第一台贝蒂克菜泊钢琴问世，这架钢琴在他去世之后现珍藏在格拉斯哥的Kelvingrove艺术博物馆，供游客观望欣赏。
